Dhanteras

Significance of Dhanteras Festival

Dhanteras, also known as Dhantrayodashi, marks the beginning of the five-day Diwali festival. It falls on the 13th lunar day of Krishna Paksha in the month of Kartik. The word Dhan means wealth, and Teras refers to the 13th day. This day is dedicated to Lord Dhanvantari, the God of Ayurveda and healing, as well as Goddess Lakshmi, the Goddess of wealth and prosperity.

According to scriptures, during the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan), Lord Dhanvantari emerged with a pot of nectar on this very day. Hence, Dhanteras is considered highly auspicious for buying new items, gold, silver, utensils, and property. It is believed that purchases made on this day multiply and bring prosperity.

Spiritually, Dhanteras is not just about material wealth but also about good health, fortune, and protection from negative energies. Lighting a lamp outside the house in the evening is said to drive away evil spirits and welcome positivity into the home.

DOs of Dhanteras

Purchase Auspicious Items – Buying gold, silver, utensils, and new clothes is considered very lucky. If not possible, even buying a small utensil or metal item invites Goddess Lakshmi’s blessings.

Light Lamps – In the evening, light 13 diyas at the entrance or in the courtyard to remove poverty, negativity, and evil influences.

Clean and Decorate the Home – A clean house attracts divine energies. Rangoli with rice flour or colors at the entrance invites Goddess Lakshmi.

Offer Prayers – Worship Lord Dhanvantari, Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Kubera (God of wealth), and Lord Ganesha for health, prosperity, and wisdom.

Charity – Donating food, clothes, or money on this day enhances good karma and ensures the blessings of wealth and happiness.

Dont’s of Dhanteras

Avoid Buying Black Items – Black is associated with negativity and should be avoided on Dhanteras.

Do Not Lend Money – Lending or borrowing money on this day is considered inauspicious as it may cause financial strain.

Avoid Sharp Items – Knives, scissors, or sharp tools should not be purchased, as they are believed to cut prosperity.

Do Not Leave Lamps Unattended – Diyas should not be left to extinguish on their own; they must be carefully placed.

Avoid Quarrels – Arguments and negative thoughts block prosperity. The day should be spent in harmony and devotion.

Protection from Evil Eye on Dhanteras

Since Dhanteras is associated with wealth and prosperity, there is a strong belief that the evil eye (buri nazar) can affect fortune. To prevent this:

Mustard Seeds and Salt Ritual – Take a pinch of mustard seeds and rock salt, rotate it around family members three times, and throw it away at a crossroads to remove negativity.

Lemon-Chili Totka – Hanging seven green chilies and one lemon at the entrance protects from jealousy and evil eye.

Black Thread – Tying a black thread on the threshold or around children’s wrists wards off negative energies.

Lighting a Mustard Oil Diya – Lighting a diya of mustard oil at the main entrance during dusk keeps away evil forces.

Mantra Chanting – Reciting Om Namah Shivaya or Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra provides divine protection from unseen negative forces.
